Caltrans urges alternate routes as the northbound 405 faces nightly weekend closures

The weekend work will include reduced lanes and ramp shutdowns.

Caltrans officials are warning motorists to expect significant delays on northbound Interstate 405 through the Sepulveda Pass this May as a major pavement rehabilitation project triggers multi-day lane reductions and ramp closures.

The work, part of a $143.7 million infrastructure initiative, will reduce the northbound freeway to as few as two lanes during extended weekend windows. While southbound lanes will remain unaffected, authorities are strongly advising commuters to utilize public transit or seek alternate routes to bypass the construction zones between Westwood and Van Nuys.

The first major disruption is scheduled from 10 p.m. Friday, May 1, through 5 a.m. Monday, May 4. During this period, the northbound I-405 will be restricted to three lanes between Skirball Center Drive and Ventura Boulevard. Notable closures include the Skirball Center Drive on-ramp and the Getty Center Drive off-ramp.

Caltrans noted that this project involves approximately 25 planned weekend reductions aimed at extending the pavement’s lifespan and improving overall safety. Residents and businesses in the vicinity should anticipate construction-related noise, dust, and vibrations.

Schedules remain subject to change based on weather conditions. Real-time traffic updates and detour maps are available via the Caltrans Quickmap service.
