Bi in the Public Eye – April 2026

We mostly cover the “big stuff” in BCN – like bi events, changes to law that particularly affect bi people, new research and so forth.

But a lot of bi news is not “real news” but gossip or social media comments from people in the public eye. Those don’t change laws but they do, albeit not as often as we might like, change hearts and minds. Or give us public statements we can really relate to and that help educate others.

Gay City News talked to Gabriel Mascaro, director of new film The Blue Trail, a film centred on the emotional growth of an older woman with bisexual overtones.

There was talk of biphobia in The Irish Sun as Brian Kennedy talked about his being voted off from Dancing With The Stars and whether it reflects lingering biphobia and homophobia in society. He notes as a gay man that “Michael (Fry) is openly bisexual. He was out first, then I was out, then the lesbians were out the following week. It’s an interesting arc.”

Closer reported on a reality start bi/bi romance as The Only Way Is Essex’s Demi Sims is now dating former Love Island Australia contestant Gabby McCarthy. Sims teased it with a TikTok of being on a plane captioned “POV: the flirting got out of hand and now you’re going Australia.” The two heavily TikTokked their time together.

Heated Rivalry has been the queer sensation of 2026 so far and ABC reported former American First Lady Jill Biden taking part in a fundraising auction tied to the show. Jill bid some US$35,000 to get a walk-on appearance in the ice hockey drama’s second season. She was outbid by someone else – in the end a pair of walk-on roles went at US$250,000 which will provide a huge funding boost for New York’s LGBT Centre. We will see who the winners are when season two drops – probably next year.

Singer Maren Morris took to TikTok to talk about her first dating experiences after coming out as bisexual. A seemingly lightweight relationship ended and “within three weeks of this completely falling apart, it was lies, threats to my reputation, and borderline extortion.” She observed that queer women friends had told her that “When you start seeing women one is going to, like, almost ruin your life, we’ve all been there,” which is a saddening truth.
