7 LGBTQ Picture Books in New Formats and Editions

Several LGBTQ-inclusive picture books are getting new editions this year, in Spanish or board book versions or with new backmatter. If you loved the originals, check out these new variations!

New Backmatter

Patricia Polacco’s 2009 In Our Mothers’ House is a gentle tale about the treasures of everyday life, community, and growing up. When first published, it was one of few picture books to depict a family with queer parents, much less one with members of three different racial identities and with masculine-presenting mothers. This new paperback edition includes discussion questions at the end, asking readers to reflect on families, bias, kindness, and community.

Bonus content! Other classics with new editions prior to 2025 include:

  • Jesse’s Dream Skirt, first published in 1979, was one of the first books about a gender-creative boy. It was rereleased in 2019 in a new edition produced by its illustrator, with original text and interior images but a new, full-color cover, clearer font, new introduction, and reader testimonials.
  • Heather Has Two Mommies, first published in 1989, was revised with updated text and completely new images in 2015. My review includes an interview with author Lesléa Newman about the book’s evolution.
  • Uncle Bobby’s Wedding, first published in 2008, got a new edition in 2020 with updated text and images (as I discussed in my post yesterday).
  • And Tango Makes Three, first published in 2005, got a new edition in 2024 with the same text and images but additional backmatter, including a new section on “Your Freedom to Read” and resources to help those fighting book bans; an Authors’ Note on the importance of books and libraries; an afterword by science journalist Eliot Schrefer on the prevalence of same-sex animal pairs and parents in the natural world; and a Note for Educators about reading the book with children of diverse family types.

New Board Book Editions

These stories were originally published as regular picture books, but now have board book editions. Note the cute cut-out shape of Grandad’s Camper!

The classic And Tango Makes Three has also had a board book edition since 2015. For even more board books, filter my Database of LGBTQ Family Books by the “Board book” tag.

New Spanish Editions

Note that Bodies Are Cool, above, which is getting a board book edition this year, has had a Spanish edition, Los Cuerpos Son Geniales, since 2023. And Tango Makes Three also had a Spanish edition, Con Tango son tres, published in 2016. For more books with Spanish editions published in previous years, plus original titles in Spanish, filter my Database of LGBTQ Family Books by the “Spanish” tag.
